Pastel de Nata, or Portuguese tarts, have a rich history dating back to the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon, Portugal, before the 18th century. Their origins are linked to the resourcefulness of Catholic monks who utilized leftover egg yolks, a byproduct from starching the garments of friars and nuns. In addition to their practical origins, these tarts served as a means for the monks to sustain themselves during the liberal revolution by selling them to tourists visiting the monastery and the nearby Torre de Belém.
The tradition of crafting and sharing Pastel de Nata has been preserved through the centuries. Today, Lady Flakys’ rendition of these tarts enjoys the highest demand, continuing the legacy of this beloved Portuguese delicacy.
Pastel de Nata by our founder Ines Gonçalves has been a staple of family gatherings and local events for years. Renowned in the Los Angeles area, particularly within the Portuguese community, these treats will take you on a delightful gastronomic journey. As Ines enters her golden years, she cannot keep up with the growing demand. However, her legacy continues through her daughter, Raquel, our new leader. Raquel was mentored by Ines and now ensures these beloved tarts remain available. Ines Gonçalves has had a successful career, including being a part-owner of a European café and managing the popular Navigator restaurant and bakery in Los Angeles.
